“Recording on a farm in Burton, TX, has its perks and pitfalls. Sometimes, it requires a conscious relocating of bee hives. Other times, it allows us to take notice of the simple happenings that occur in nature that we miss in the city.
When we recorded ‘Mordechai,’ most nights we would retreat to the front porch to wind down. Each night, we would watch a pair of love birds fly aroudn together and retreat to their nest on a ledge. One night, the male was flapping his wings and screaming. We thought he’d lost his lady bird.
The next night, however, we realized, he wasn’t upset; he was celbrating the birth of their three baby birds. For the rest of the session, he would sleep on the ledge just outside the nest so his lady and babies could be comfortable in their home. We watched the mother and father bird teach the babies how to fly.
